The City of Lausanne and its schools and colleges are facing a number of problems with regard to the former playgrounds: spaces that are not used at weekends and during the holidays in a context of high property pressure, giving rise to all sorts of nuisances from unwanted users ; large concrete surfaces creating heat islands and unsuitable for children's play. etc. Hence the campaign to renovate and consult the populations concerned: pupils, parents, teachers and educators. To gather the needs expressed and pass them on to the architects, the organisers opted for graphic recording.
It was a particularly refreshing mandate for me because most of the participants were children aged 5 to 9 - a real explosion of creativity! The ideas for illustrations were very concrete and came from everywhere. Children even came up to me to suggest drawings or ask me to draw them themselves.
The experience made me want to work more with children. It was great to see how spontaneously and effortlessly they have everything that so many companies are trying to develop, with varying degrees of difficulty: thinking 'out of the box', being 'disruptive' and creative, asking questions and challenging the status quo, etc. Children really are kings in this field and I'm delighted that the City of Lausanne is including them in the consultation process and taking their opinions seriously. A fine example of inclusion and a major source of inspiration for me.
