As with a lot of work, particularly on strategy or internal projects, the content of all the graphic recording I do at IMD is confidential. I regularly illustrate sessions on marketing, finance, leadership, digital strategy, etc. in the EMBA programme and various projects in other programmes. This time it was a question of providing live support for the session where a new class of EMBAs, 60 participants strong, define the values, operating methods and references that will forge their identity and enable them to strengthen the cohesion of their group and maximise their learning.
The session lasts 1.5 hours and there's no way of preparing it in advance, as the content takes shape on the spur of the moment through interaction. As well as the tight schedule, the number of speakers is also a challenge! The design is projected continuously onto a side screen, then onto a large screen in the centre, so that the participants can make suggestions.
These conditions of almost total improvisation create a real adrenalin rush and immerse me in the energy of the group with great intensity. The final moment when I zoom out to show the whole thing is very gratifying! The participants applaud and are enthusiastic. They recognise themselves in the visuals, which give concrete form to their discussions. Freehand creation in real time creates a much stronger emotional bond than any standard presentation or visuals.
